Are you looking for a 2010 Ford Explorer?

Q: why is my 1991 ford explorer so hard to start?
i have a 1991 ford explorer, very hard to start, will almost run battery down before it starts, and sometimes does.
runs fine after start, can anyone tell me why its so hard to start?

A: there are many reasons why your explorer won’t turn over as easily as it should, but i’ll cover the most common reasons below.

- faulty/worn spark plugs: when was the last time you had a tune-up done on your vehicle? many times, worn or faulty spark plugs can be a big reason for hard starts, bad mileage, lack of power, and even miss-fires. spark plugs are what burn the fuel and air mixture inside your engine, so if you don’t have a good spark, it’ll be that much harder for your engine to turn over as it should. a good quality spark plug from a major auto part store should run you no more than $4 each, although more economic ones are also available. spark plugs should be changed out about every 8 months in order to achieve maximum mpg’s. however, this timeframe varies depending on the quality of the spark plug used.

- faulty/worn spark plug wires: if your spark plugs are still in good running condition, your spark plug wires might be to blame. a spark plug is only as good as the wire it gets its power from. if the wires are old, they may have a corroded or even rusted boot (where the wire makes contact with the spark plug). in order to achieve maximum mpg’s, i suggest changing the wires out once a year, although running the same wires for about 2 years is still acceptable. i suggest using nothing smaller than a 8mm wire. a set of good quality wires should run you no more than $35.

- clogged/dirty air filter: your engine requires a constant flow of air, which it mixes with fuel in order to create a highly combustible blend. if the engine is being highly restricted from breathing properly, it may take a lot more for the engine to turn over because it can’t create a good, uniformed combustion. this will also cause your mpg’s to drop heavily as well as your power, not to mention the wear and tear you’re causing your engine by forcing it that much more to run. a popular and commonly used air filter should run you no more than $8.

these are the most basic, common reasons as to why your engine might have such a hard time starting up. i strongly suggest you perform a thorough tune-up on your vehicle as soon as possible if you haven’t done so within the past year. if you’re up for it, how-to walk-through’s can be found on the website listed below and in-depth manuals for your vehicle can be purchased at your major auto parts store. it’s a pinch in your pocket and times are hard right now, but a proper tune-up can be the difference between having a good running vehicle or a busted engine, which could lead to thousands of dollars in repair costs. also, refrain from cranking the engine for more than 4 seconds at a time. turn and hold the key and release after 4 seconds and then try again, pausing for about 2-3 seconds between each attempt. continuously cranking your engine can wear down your starter very quickly and is harsh on your engine internals. pump the gas pedal 2 or 3 times after the first crank attempt, but no more. i hope this info helps and that your explorer turns out ok.

Q: 1994 ford explorer passenger side door will not open with key?
I just bought a 1994 ford explorer from my neighbor. It runs great but as with any used car there are a few “issues.” I noticed today, the passenger side door does not open with a key. It goes in, turns, but does nothing. I can open the door once I unlock it with the power locks, from inside and out. I am guessing I need a new mechanism for it, how much does it cost to have these installed, or is there any way to get it working otherwise?

A: you might need a new latch.but first Pull the door panel and see if you do not have any lose parts in the latch area.

Q: I have a 1991 Ford Explorer and im not getting any power to my fuel pump. What could of happened?
I have a 1991 Ford Explorer with a 4.0L V6. It drove for a while and it just stopped. The fuel pump wasn’t turning on at all. So i replaced the pump and relay but still no power. What else could it be to not be sending power to the pump? Can i bypass it if i have to?

A: there is a electronic fuel shutoff that is designed to kill the power to the fuel pump in case of an accident….if you hit a bump hard or a curb this can trip look in your owners guide or under the hood for a chart also can be located in the back drivers side inside the compartment look for ayellow handle

Q: Is there an effective way to refit or convert a 2002 Ford Explorer for better mileage & lower gas consumption?
I have a 2002 Ford Explorer & a 1986 Mustang. They get about the same, pitiful mileage of about 14mpg. I can’t afford a new car/hybrid. Is there anyway to get better mileage out of either other than the basics…tire inflation, oil & filter replacements, etc. And…unfortunately, a bicycle won’t take me where I need to go. Are hydrogen or water conversion kits really effective & would either work for me? Thanks for any suggestions.

A: 14 in a 2002 Explorer? Must be a lot of city driving.

Step one would be a new fuel filter, air filter, and spark plug change if not done within last 30,000 miles or so and oil in last 5,000 miles as most neglect this and eats the fuel mileage hard.

make sure air pressure is at 35psi and be easy on the gas is about the only real proven fuel economy answers.

The water conversions still have the jury out on them.. some swear by them, some say it doesn’t work as claimed for the money spent to buy and install the system (as the water has to be metered just so or you can explode a engine)

And what I read is from certified techs… not the people selling these systems on the side

Q: How do i grease the suspension on a 98 Ford Explorer?
I have sqeaking coming from the front suspension on my 98 Ford Explorer Sport. I got underneath and nothings broke, and it’s pretty clean except for minor rust. It only squeaks when the chasis bounces up and down. A few people from explorer clubs tell me its a common problem that can be resolved by greasing the suspension and bushings, but I dont know how. Thanx for any advice in advance.

A: The radial axis bushings squeak ,I used some lithium grease in a spray can.they can be replaced reasonably easy also
ase tech

Q: why does my 99 ford explorer idle so fast when I first start it?
just bought this 99 ford explorer, and its seems to idle real fast when it is first started, it slows down a little after a minute or two. Is there a way that I can adjust it, or this how it is suppose to act?

A: Your vehicle will idle fast according to the temp of your engine. A cold engine idles fast to warm up quicker and when it gets to operating temp. the PCM will reduce the idle speed.

Q: What sound system should I buy for my Ford Explorer?
I have a 1997 Ford Explorer and I want to buy a sound system with loud bass and everything. What can I buy without going overboard on the price. I also don’t want to change the dashoard and I do have a 6 disc changer inside the center arm rest console. Would I be able to put the controller there? Thanks!

A: how loud u want to go?
4 ch. amp to power 2 new front speakers (or use 1 channel of the amp) and a sub in a slim box made for trucks… wedge box ported and tuned to your sub. go with a 10 at least.

Q: How do I attach a trailer to my Ford Explorer?
I have a 1999 Ford Explorer Sport and I need detailed instructions(pictures would be great but not necessary) about what kind of hitch to get, how to install the hitch, attach the trailer, and connect the trailer’s brake lights. The trailer would be about 2500-3000lbs.

A: Dealers have them ready to fit. It is a specialty job and needs their expertise.
You cannot do it yourself

Q: Does anyone know why my ford Explorer coughs and splutters for about 2 minutes when starting in the morning?
my ford explorer is very erratic when starting in the mornings.Engine races then revs drop drastically and engine often dies totally. After about 2minutes driving the engine is fine for the rest of the day.

A: wow….some of the answers….
check idle air control valve. they act stupid only when first started. try holding your foot lightly on the gas pedal. if it stays running nicely then check the iac for sure. i dont know that i am onboard with the cool temp as it would typically cause driveability issues most if not all of the time.
my $ would pull the iac, attempt to clean it with brake cleaner and reinstall. if it still acts up and runs with light pedal pressure then just replace it.
made lots of $$$ at ford on those…not uncommon to replace if the engine has a lot of miles or tons of short trips carboning it up.

Q: How to unlock a 2003 Ford Explorer with keys inside?
I just locked my keys in my vehicle. Like I said, it’s a 2003 Ford Explorer. I’ve tried the coat-hanger and it’s not working. I have a spare key but the door lock is broken from the outside. I really need my vehicle unlocked. Can anyone help me figure out how to unlock it pleeeaasse?
The passenger side doesn’t have a lock on the outside.

A: go through the back hatch!

Q: How much would it cost for a Ford Dealer to install third row seat in 2003 Ford Explorer Eddie Bauer V8?
How much would it cost for a ford dealer to install third row seat in 2003 Ford Explorer Eddie Bauer V8? Also how would people get to the third row seat? Would you have to fold down the 2nd row seats? The second row seat are 60/40 split-folding 2nd row seat w/head restraints.

Also what about reverse sensor, how much would that cost?

A: On installing the 3rd row seat, more than what you would want to spend. The passenger side seat would have to release and fold foward for someone to get to the 3rd row and if you do not have the slots in the rear for the 3rd row seat to fit in, it could get very expensive.
On the reverse sensor, I would check at a auto parts store before dealing with the dealership. Most parts at the dealership are 150% higher than at a auto parts store, if the sensor is available through them.

Q: I have 2002 Ford Explorer with factory security/alarm. Can I get remote start installed as well?
My Explorer has factory anti-theft and security alarm. I would like to have a remote start on this vehicle for cold weather season. Can this be done and does it have to be a remote starter system from Ford. Manual states “no after-market” remote starts or problems will arise; that I am to have only Ford remote starter installed at a dealership. Since its relatively expensive, I’d like to have it done correctly the first time so everything works. Thanks!

A: I do not have a ford…i have an infiniti FX 35 and i got a remote start installed for a relatively cheap price…and it wasn’t in a infiniti factory. They can do it relatively easily without any problems and your security won’t be bypassed at all. just make sure you go to a trusty mechanic or body shop which every supplies the gear and would install it for you.

Q: How much does a 2000 ford explorer weigh?
2000 ford explorer
4.0 OHV

finding in the 5,000 but thought maybe that was a little too much

maybe not
but what is it in pounds?

A: Each vehicle usually has a sticker on the door panel that tells what it’s gross weight is.

Q: I might buy a 98 ford explorer 4dr 2wd v6 150k miles Do this truck have a timing belt? How much to replace it?
I don’t have much money so i need something affordable and to get me to work.
Anyone had any problems with their 98 ford explorer 4dr v6 2wd?
Do it require alot of maintence? Thanks.

A: The V6 does not have a timing belt it is a chain. With the miles on it the vehicle it could have allot of mechanical issues depending on how well it was maintained. My advice is buy something else like a small car.

Q: what size tires are best on a 2000 ford explorer?
